## Quick answer

- **Cost:** For most consumer baskets the north is 25-35% cheaper for the same quality (our Holiday Cost Index, October 2026). The gap closes on buses, imported goods, SIM data and high-end activities.
- **Status:** The UK and Canada do not recognise the TRNC, and the Republic of Cyprus is a full EU member (GOV.UK, updated 14 August 2026; Government of Canada).
- **Entry through the north:** GOV.UK: if you enter the Republic of Cyprus through the north, for example through Ercan, authorities consider that illegal entry, and you could be fined, refused entry or exit, or prevented from crossing back.
- **Insurance and health:** Many travel policies exclude the north, so get north cover in writing. GHIC and EHIC do not work in the north, as reported by Jetset Travel.
- **Airports and money:** Larnaca and Paphos serve the south, in euros. Ercan, in the north, is reached via Türkiye, and the north uses Turkish lira.
- **Rental cars:** A Kipra car cannot cross the line in either direction. A south-side rental driven north needs a border payment plus kiosk insurance that covers only the other car.

---

Choosing between north and south Cyprus comes down to three practical things:
what you want to spend, what your insurance covers, and how you enter. The north
is **25-35% cheaper** on most consumer baskets by our own index. The south is
inside the EU, and the insurance and health-card limits below apply to the north.
We rent cars on the north side, so weigh the cost section with that in
mind. The politics are a separate subject, and this page takes no side on them.

## What is the difference between north and south Cyprus?

The difference between north and south Cyprus, for a visitor, is status, currency
and airports. The island has had two administrations since 1974, and the
[neutral history of why Cyprus is divided](/en/guide/why-is-cyprus-divided/) sets
out how each party describes the events.

| | North | South |
| - | ----- | ----- |
| Administration | Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), not recognised by the UK or Canada | Republic of Cyprus, a full EU member |
| Currency | **Turkish lira** | **Euro** |
| Airports | Ercan, reached via Türkiye | Larnaca and Paphos |
| Driving side | **Left** | **Left** |
| Visitors in 2025 | **2,589,729** (TRNC Tourism Planning Department) | **4,534,073** (CyStat) |

## Is North Cyprus cheaper than South Cyprus?

Yes on most lines: for most consumer baskets the north is **25-35% cheaper** for
the same quality, according to our own
[Cyprus Holiday Cost Index](/en/blog/cyprus-holiday-cost-index-north-vs-south/)
(October 2026, at about 55.7 TL to the euro). Bear in mind who built the index.

| Item | North | South |
| ---- | ----- | ----- |
| Mid-range restaurant meal, per person | **€15** | **€22** |
| Café espresso | **€2.50** | **€3.50** |
| Local draught beer, 0.5 L | **€3** | **€5** |
| 95 petrol, per litre | **€1.38** | **€1.76** |
| 3-star hotel double, per night | **€55** | **€75** |
| 5-star hotel double, per night | **€140** | **€220** |

The gap closes on buses, imported goods, SIM data and high-end activities. The
hotel figures are shoulder-season averages, and peak August adds **30-50%** on
both sides. For a full holiday total, the
[North Cyprus trip budget for two](/en/guide/north-cyprus-trip-budget/) adds up
the north-side lines per day. Car rental is not in this table: compare it on live
prices for your dates.

## What do the UK and Canadian governments say about north and south?

GOV.UK states that the British government does not recognise the self-declared
TRNC, and that the Republic of Cyprus is a full EU member (Cyprus travel advice,
updated 14 August 2026). Canada does not recognise the TRNC either. The GOV.UK
practical points for travellers are these:

- **Crossing:** you can use any crossing point to move between north and south.
Only pedestrians use Ledra Palace and Ledra/Lokmacı.
- **The 90-day count:** Republic of Cyprus authorities count time in the north
  towards the 90-day visa-free total.
- **Entering through the north:** if you enter the Republic of Cyprus through the
north, for example through Ercan, authorities consider that illegal entry. You
could be fined, refused entry or exit, or prevented from crossing back.

Canada's travel advice tells travellers to "exercise a high degree of caution" in
the north and to take normal precautions in the south. It adds that medical
services in the north can be more basic, that separate insurance is needed when
driving a rental in the north, and that consular help may be limited. These are
those governments' positions, reported here with attribution. The TRNC's own
visa and passport rules for arrivals are on the
[North Cyprus passport and visa rules](/en/guide/north-cyprus-passport-visa-rules/)
page.

## Does travel insurance and health cover work in North Cyprus?

Often not by default: many travel policies exclude the north, and some UK
insurers state that their policies do not cover it. Ask your insurer for north
cover in writing before you book. **GHIC and EHIC do not work in the north**, as
reported by Jetset Travel, so they are no substitute for that policy. The
hospitals and numbers to know are in the
[emergency numbers and hospitals in North Cyprus](/en/guide/emergency-numbers-hospitals-north-cyprus/)
page.

## Which airport do you use for north or south Cyprus?

For the south you use Larnaca or Paphos; for the north you use Ercan, reached via
Türkiye, or you fly to Larnaca and cross on foot. From Larnaca Airport to Famagusta
via the Deryneia Crosspoint is **about 1 hour plus the crossing**, as of 2026, and
the steps are in the
[Larnaca to Famagusta route page](/en/guide/larnaca-airport-to-famagusta-via-deryneia/).
The first-time arrival layer, from roaming to emergency numbers, is in the
[first-time visitor's checklist](/en/guide/first-time-visitors-north-cyprus/).

## Can you take a rental car between north and south Cyprus?

No: **a Kipra car cannot cross the line in either direction**. It is a legal
restriction, and insurance stops at the line. The reverse route has its own trap:
a south-side rental driven north needs a border payment plus kiosk insurance that
covers **only the other car**, so damage to your own rental stays with you. The
total is worked through in the
[south vs north rental cost analysis](/en/blog/south-vs-north-cyprus-rental-real-cost/).

Kipra Rent A Car is a Famagusta-based local rental company with VAT and
third-party insurance included in every displayed price, and it can only speak for
the north side. If you land at Larnaca, the
[Larnaca Airport meet and transfer](/en/larnaca-airport-car-rental/) (**€85/way**,
as of 2026) has the car waiting on the north side of the crossing.

## Which side of Cyprus suits which kind of traveller?

Which side suits you depends on the line in your plan that matters most, so this
table sorts by traveller rather than naming a winner:

| If this is you | The side that fits | Why |
| -------------- | ------------------ | --- |
| You want the lowest spend on meals, petrol and hotels | **North** | 25-35% cheaper on most baskets (our index, October 2026) |
| You rely on your standard travel policy or GHIC/EHIC | **South** | GHIC and EHIC do not work in the north, and many policies exclude it |
| You do not want a connection via Türkiye | **South airports** | Larnaca and Paphos; Larnaca also leads to the north on foot |
| You want prices in euros | **South** | The north uses Turkish lira |
| You want Salamis and Famagusta's walled city as your base | **North** | See [things to do in North Cyprus, ranked](/en/guide/things-to-do-north-cyprus/) |
| You want both sides | **Either** | Cross on foot, and check the GOV.UK entry point above first |

No line in that table is a judgement on either community or administration. Which
side you choose is a holiday decision, and you can see both on one trip.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Is north or south Cyprus better for a holiday?**

Neither is better for everyone. The north is cheaper on most lines of our October 2026 cost index. The south is in the EU, and the insurance and health-card limits apply to the north. Your budget, your insurance and your entry route decide it. This page gives no political verdict.

**Is North Cyprus cheaper than South Cyprus?**

On most consumer baskets, yes: 25-35% for the same quality, according to our own Holiday Cost Index (October 2026). A mid-range meal is €15 against €22. The gap closes on buses, imported goods, SIM data and high-end activities.

**Can I visit both north and south Cyprus on one trip?**

Yes. GOV.UK says you can use any crossing point to move between them, and only pedestrians use Ledra Palace and Ledra/Lokmacı. Your entry route matters: GOV.UK warns about entering the Republic of Cyprus through the north, for example through Ercan.

**Can I take a rental car between north and south Cyprus?**

A Kipra car cannot cross in either direction: it is a legal restriction, and insurance stops at the line. A south-side rental driven north needs a border payment plus kiosk insurance that covers only the other car, so damage to your own rental stays with you.
