What happened to Varosha, in one neutral paragraph?

Varosha was a Famagusta resort of about 39,000 residents and about 109 hotels before 1974. Its residents left in August 1974, and the area stayed sealed until part of it was opened in October 2020, a politically disputed decision the Greek Cypriot side objects to. It is the former home of tens of thousands of people. How the parties describe the events of 1974 is set out, with attribution, in the neutral history of why Cyprus is divided. This page takes no side and covers only the practical facts of a visit.

Can you visit Varosha today?

Yes, you can visit the opened part of Varosha through the official tourist entrance, and entry is free, according to Cyprus FAQ (updated October 2026). Only designated routes are open. The beachfront and the main hotel street are walkable.

Elsewhere in North Cyprus Drive to Famagusta and park near the entrance
Republic of Cyprus side The most convenient crossing is the Deryneia Crosspoint, 8 km and 10-15 minutes from Famagusta

Coming from the south, you cross on foot at Deryneia, which is open 07:00-23:00 daily. A Kipra rental car cannot cross the line in either direction, because of a legal restriction and because insurance stops there. Kipra Rent A Car is a Famagusta-based local rental company with VAT and third-party insurance included in every displayed price, and it hands cars over on the north side of the crossing free of charge. Landing at Larnaca, the Larnaca Airport car rental with meet and transfer covers the route. The arrival basics are in the first-time visitor’s facts for North Cyprus.
