If you drive at home in the UK or EU, read this number first: using a mobile phone at the wheel in North Cyprus costs 70,893 TL (€1,293), exactly the same fine as driving without a licence. It is also four times the fine for driving more than 40 km/h over the limit. The full list below has been in force since August 2026, and the legal amounts are in Turkish lira (TL). It belongs on the same pre-trip checklist as the left-side switch in the first-time visitor’s checklist for North Cyprus.

No technical inspection certificate 7,089 €129
Not carrying the driving licence during a police check 3,544 €64

The euro column is Politis’s conversion at 4 August 2026 rates, printed as published, which is why the same lira amount sometimes differs by a euro. The lira amount is the fine, and its euro value moves with the rate: at 55.80 TL to the euro on 30 October 2026, 70,893 TL is about €1,270.

The list does not include parking or speeding less than 20 km/h over the limit, so this page quotes no amount for either. A missing line is not a permission.

How much is a speeding fine in North Cyprus?

A North Cyprus speeding fine is 7,089 TL (€129) for 20 to 40 km/h over the limit and 17,723 TL (€323) for more than 40 km/h over, as of August 2026. Applied to the published speed limits, the bands look like this (the km/h bands are our own arithmetic):

Road Limit 7,089 TL band 17,723 TL band
Built-up area 50 km/h 70-90 km/h above 90 km/h
Open road, no sign 65 km/h 85-105 km/h above 105 km/h
Open road signed at 80 80 km/h 100-120 km/h above 120 km/h
Intercity dual carriageway 100 km/h 120-140 km/h above 140 km/h

Signed open roads go up to 80 km/h, so a lower sign means lower bands. For visitors used to motorway limits, note how low the unsigned open-road limit is. Speed cameras operate on the Famagusta-Kyrenia and Famagusta-Nicosia roads. For everything beyond the fine amounts, from roundabouts to driving on the left, read the rules of the road in North Cyprus.

How much is the fine for using a phone while driving in North Cyprus?

The North Cyprus fine for using a mobile phone while driving is 70,893 TL (€1,293 at the 4 August 2026 rate), the same as driving without a licence or refusing a breath test. Hands-free calling is allowed. The published list does not spell out where the line falls for a mounted phone used as a sat-nav, so the low-risk habit is to set the route before you pull away. On this list a phone offence costs five times a seat-belt offence (our arithmetic).

What is the drink-driving fine in North Cyprus?

The North Cyprus drink-driving fine is 35,446 TL (€646) just over the limit and 70,893 TL (€1,294 as printed by Politis) in the top band, as of August 2026. The alcohol limit published in our driving rules post is 0.05% (0.5 promille in the usual notation). Press reports print the bands as “50 to 100 promille” and “over 100 promille”; against the 0.05% limit we read those as 0.05% to 0.10% and over 0.10%, and that reading is ours rather than an official conversion.

Refusing a breath test costs 70,893 TL, so refusing is priced at the top alcohol band. Driving under the influence of pharmaceutical substances is a separate 35,446 TL (€647) line. A town ride home is priced in the North Cyprus taxi fares guide.

How do you pay a traffic fine in North Cyprus, and by when?

North Cyprus traffic fines are payable by card only: cash is not accepted at police stations, so keep a bank card with you even on a cash-heavy trip. The police number is 155.

Two honest gaps, as of November 2026:

  • Online lookup: we found no public official online service for checking TRNC traffic fines.
  • Deadline and late penalty: we found no official text on either. Use the deadline written on your fine slip, and ask the police if the slip is unclear. Deadlines and late penalties quoted on commercial websites are not repeated here because we could not trace them to an official source.

What happens with a camera fine on a rental car in North Cyprus?

A camera fine notified after the rental goes to the rental company and then follows the process in your rental contract, so it can reach you after the car has been returned. The rules themselves do not change for a rental: the red Z plates on North Cyprus rental cars mark the car, they do not exempt the driver.

Your licence is the document that matters at every police check. Not carrying it is a 3,544 TL fine, and it has to be the physical card, as the driving licence requirements for North Cyprus explain. If the stop follows a collision, the sequence is in what to do after an accident in a rental car. Kipra Rent A Car is a Famagusta-based local rental company with VAT and third-party insurance included in every displayed price; the number on your rental agreement, +90 546 996 1004, is the one to call with a question about a fine.

Why did North Cyprus traffic fines change in August 2026?

North Cyprus traffic fines were updated in August 2026 after the new minimum wage was published. Kıbrıs Gazetesi reported it on 4 August 2026 in one sentence: “Resmi Gazete’de asgari ücretin yayımlanmasının ardından, trafik suçlarına uygulanacak para cezaları da güncellendi.” In English: following the minimum wage’s publication in the Official Gazette, the fines for traffic offences were updated too.

Our own arithmetic, not an official statement: every amount equals a round share of the 70,893 TL gross monthly minimum wage, rounded down. We found no official source stating these percentages.

Share of gross wage (our arithmetic) Amount
5% 3,544 TL
10% 7,089 TL
15% 10,633 TL
20% 14,178 TL
25% 17,723 TL
50% 35,446 TL
100% 70,893 TL
200% 141,786 TL

If that link holds, the amounts can move again after the next wage decision, which is expected around January 2027 (an expectation, not an announcement). The current figures and history are in the North Cyprus minimum wage in lira and euros guide. Check the date on any fine amount you read elsewhere, including older pages that predate the August 2026 list.

How many drivers do police check in North Cyprus?

North Cyprus police checked 1,924 drivers on one published day, 2 January 2026, according to the TRNC Police General Directorate as cited by Cyprus FAQ. Of those, 347 drivers were held administratively liable, and 34 vehicles were taken off the road. The liable drivers work out at about 18% of those checked that day (our arithmetic). It is a single day, not an annual rate.
